AFUE: Moving Towards More Effective Aerial Firefighting

By Michael Archer, Writer

As the numbers of acres burned, structures destroyed, lives lost, and dollars spent continue to increase, the U.S. Forest Service has finally taken the first steps towards revamping their way of conducting aerial firefighting operations and the result is called the Aerial Firefighting Use and Effectiveness (AFUE) study.

Rapid Initial Attack: The Wave Of The Future?

By Michael Archer, Writer

Despite a relatively quiet wildfire season in 2019, increasingly ferocious wildfires are bound to occur again as in years past. Although initial attack on wildfires has been proven to work time and again, helping U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and state agencies limit the percentage of wildfires that burn out of control, is something more needed? Could there be an approach that would do more to snuff wildland blazes faster, limit them to fewer acres, and better cope with the problem of overgrown forests that lead to explosive blazes? One man thinks there is.

Five Way To Avoid Wildfire Destruction In 2020

By Brett L’Esperance, Dauntless Air CEO

As a company wholly dedicated to fighting wildfires from the air to protect and support those on the ground, we have a chance to see trends that may not be visible to everyone. While it’s clear the 2019 U.S. fire season wasn’t as destructive as the 2018 season, from our vantage point we see several areas for concern that will continue to hamper our collective ability to protect people, land and property from these threats.

As we reflect on the current fire season and prepare for a worsening wildfire environment, it’s our responsibility to learn all we can from the past and use it to help drive change in the future.

“The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can and keep moving on.” - An American General

Washington State’s Department of Natural Resources has fought wildfires with this same aggressive strategy since 2016 and, to date, it has been extremely successful.

How Optimized Initial Attack Strategies Are Winning A New Wildfire War

By Brett L’Esperance, Dauntless Air CEO

Around the world, wildfire behavior is changing. In the U.S., climate change, unhealthy forests and human development in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) are combining to create more frequent, fast-burning blazes. As crews on the ground battle these dangerous and increasingly common threats, we have a duty to provide them with the best support to ensure their safety and success. One key piece of that support system is fire aviation.
